Austin Parks Geotag Project

The Austin Parks Foundation is working to improve our parks database for park searches online. We're also going to use this database in the creation of a free park related mobile application!

We need your help!

We need volunteers to go to parks and, using a smartphone, a data plan, and google maps, send us the longitude and latitude of the park entrances. It's a fun project that is quite literally a walk in the park!

How to Collect and Send a Geotag
Using an iPhone:

What You Need:

1. iPhone, 2. Google Maps, 3. Data Plan

When you're standing exactly at the park entrance (which, for most parks, is the parking lot), and with the maps application running, first click the arrow at the bottom left corner. Then, click the bottom right options button (curled page corner), then 'Drop Pin'.

The Dropped Pin should appear on your map titled 'Dropped Pin'. Click the blue circle/white arrow to get the Info page.

On the info page click 'Share Location' at the bottom of the screen, then choose Email. This should bring up an email with 'dropped pin' in the text. The dropped pin info contains the longitude and latitude information we need.

Send this email to eric@austinparks.org with the park name in the subject line and you're done. It's that easy!

Just be sure to be right at the park entrance when you hit ‘drop pin’, otherwise the data won’t be useable.

Pocket Parks: for very small parks, go ahead and stand in the middle of the park to collect the park coordinates.

List of Austin's Parks Needing Longitude and Latitude Information

(This list will be updated weekly to reflect new information. You can use this list as a reference for which parks still need to be geotagged. Please note that not all parks are in alphabetical order)
