Celebrate in 2009!
Celebrate in 2009!

Description: One of Austin's four original downtown parks, Wooldridge Park's bandstand has been the site of political rallies, concerts, and celebrations for 100 years. 2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of Wooldridge Square.

Wooldridge is home to Sunday evening summer concerts sponsored by the Hartman Foundation. Austin Parks Foundation brings you knee-high chess every Saturday afternoon. You can reserve the park for events by calling the PARD reservation line, 974-6797.

Wooldridge Square Park turns 100 years old, June 2009.

To celebrate the park’s hundredth anniversary, the Downtown Austin Alliance, Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association, Austin Parks Foundation, and Austin Parks and Recreation are collaborating on a variety of events and physical improvements.

Throughout its 100 years, Wooldridge has been the site of political rallies and debates, cultural performances, and countless weddings. In recent years, however, the park has been in decline. Active intervention is needed to address dying trees, eroding grass, and other issues.

We believe in a three-pronged approach to this kind of park situation. Throughout Wooldridge’s anniversary year, we’ll be supporting events to add life to the park, improvements to upgrade the park’s appearance, and volunteer engagement to sustain the park.

Celebratory events began April 23rd, when The Fusebox Festival kicks off with a new work by Graham Reynolds called “Parades, Processionals and Percussion”, featuring 50 drummers. On the evening of July 4th, the Invincible Czars’ performance of the “1812 Overture” will get you in the mood for fireworks later that night along Lady Bird Lake. There’s also giant chess available every Saturday afternoon from 12:30-3:30. More events will be listed here soon.

This spring, parks department foresters pruned many of the park’s older trees. Planting of additional trees is planned for this fall. Austin Parks Foundation will be helping to restore irrigation and grass.

We would like to establish a volunteer friends group to help plan future improvements for Wooldridge. If you are interested in joining this effort, please contact us.
